It doesn't help that when Pillars of Creation comes around, they suddenly introduce a new major character and stick with her POV for the entire book- which is made all the more frustrating since it's a "misunderstanding" storyline where she thinks the good guys are evil.īut more than anything, I think the series was hurt by how preachy it got. You realize there's supposed to be an overarcing plot, but it's hard to feel like it's moving. Just, as the series goes on, I think it buckles under its own weight. In that regard I really did enjoy them, and I liked Richard and Kahlan's relationship (apart from Temple of the Winds, when Richard was an idiot). They're fun adventure stories about magic and a Battle Couple and all the trappings of fantasy. It means the story is about, "How will Richard and Kahlan get out of today's mess?" Basically, each book is an episode, telling the story of how Richard and Kahlan solved that book's problem.Īnd on that level, I actually think they're good books. Now, I actually think that doesn't have to be a dealbreaker. The characters really have no development. I wonder why he doesn't send any assassins anymore." Oh yeah, there's a Keeper of the Underworld or something. Oh hey, there's a bunch of sorceresses down south. ![]() A defense mechanism that somehow translates to "Either everyone dies OR hell on earth OR the good guys win."īasically, ideas and concepts are introduced on a book by book basis and there's not very much of an overarcing development of the plot or the world. But we later learn they were made by ancient wizards as a defense mechanism. In the first book, they're Pandora's Box-ish, and the mystery of that helps smooth things over. The Boxes of Ordon do recur in the storyline, but they're really unsatisfying concepts. Are the demons allied with the Keeper of the Underworld? Is the Keeper basically the Devil or is he just a concept like Richard says? If he's a concept, then who sent that assassin from the underworld?! Your world is full of magic and junk punching you in the face Richard, why do you have to stick to this whole, "Oh, the Creator's totally not real. There are demons and you can make pacts for power. They never appear again or are referenced again. There's an organization, The Blood of the Fold, dedicated to lynching magic-users, which figures in the plot of one book and the backstory of one character. And we never hear anything about them ever again and that character is never referenced again. It has a people, they have a homeland, so we're told. Kahlan has a sentient ball of light companion (much like the Aon in Elantris). Physically, the old softcovers even kind of resemble the WoT softcovers, to my mind.īut a consistent problem throughout the series is that it introduces concepts it never really revisits or fully examines the consequences of. ![]() I suspect part of why they may rub people the wrong way is that they lead you to believe the series is going to be an overarcing saga with a well-developed world, yet it never quite delivers. I know people tend to be divided on the books, but while it's been a long time, I remember really enjoying them up to Faith of the Fallen. I saw a post over on r/brandonsanderson that brought the books back to mind.
